Zombies have a reputation for being notoriously hard to get rid of with many sources claiming the only sure fire way to stop the undead being to “remove the head or destroy the brain” and it would seem The Walking Dead is no different with walkers attacking from all different directions at present.
First comes the first of a series of video games, closely followed the latest volume in the comic book series with the third season of the hit TV show only a few months behind.
A New Day
The first of the festering corpses to be set free upon the land is The Walking Dead: A New Day, the first episode of video game by TellTale Games. The game, which is available for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Xbox Live and Playstation 3, sees you taking control of previously unknown character, Lee Everett.
Episode one has you and Lee taking on the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, a time when comic book and TV protagonist, Rick Grimes, was conveniently in a coma (a rather popular introduction to characters in the genre considering you would be unable to protect yourself from the undead hordes.) While you don’t actually get to control any of the popular characters, you do bump into them along your travels with Glenn and Hershel both making appearances in the first episode.
I’ve been playing the game on Xbox Live and while you’re often being attacked by manic walkers, it’s not your usual survival horror. The closest comparison I can make is 2005′s bizarro action game Stubbs The Zombie but with more focus on character development.
Something To Fear
At almost 100 issues, Something To Fear is the 17th volume in the ongoing comic book series. Starting at issue #97 and continuing up until #102. Volume 17 picks up where A Larger World left off, in which Rick and the other survivors discover a larger community of uninfected called Hilltop Colony, of course a series about survival wouldn’t be very good if they all lived happily ever after so rather than seeing the gang get back on their feet to be torn apart by a group of walkers ever volume the impression left by the end of the last issue is that the real trials will be dealing with a group at each others throats.
Issue #97 is out tomorrow, but you can get a quick peek over at comicbook.com by following the link – here.
Safety Behind Bars
Although not as immediate as the previously mentioned ways to get your Walking Dead fix, season 3 of the TV is currently in production in preparation for it’s return later this year. The third season plan to pick up after the explosive finale of season 2 which saw a number of character deaths, the introduction of a new character, the gang having to flee from their refuge and a hint at where the show planned to go after an outburst from Rick threatens to split the group.
Unsurprising, the new episodes will follow the story of volume 3 of the comic books so fans of the books will know what to expect but if not you might not want to read ahead.
Season 3 will see the survivors move into an abandoned prison as they look for a more permanent location. While the zombies will still play a role in the story, creator Robert Kirkman has said that the real focus of the series has always been how the humans will cope in a post-apocalyptic world.
The plan was always to evolve naturally into a place where the zombies essentially become a manageable threat. You know the rules. You know how to deal with them. To a certain extent they become something to not really be scared of unless you mess up. Humans, however, do not follow any rules and will always do something that surprises you and are capable of doing things far worse than trying to eat you…We’re definitely going to be seeing a lot of horrible things.
Season three is due to air this October.
